The talk will cover: *Free hearing screening for all participants Facilitator: Steffen Rose, Head Audiologist and Hearing Aid Acoustician Alzheimer's Disease: 23 Sept (Thurs), 2 pm ($8) Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, and eventually even the ability to carry out the simplest task. In most people with Alzheimer's symptoms first appear after age 60. Caring for a person with Alzheimer's disease can have high physical, emotional, and financial costs. Becoming well-informed about the disease is one important long-term coping strategy. Join Joyce Fernandez from Alzheimer's Disease Association and a caregiver herself, to learn more. Shoulder Massage: 24 Sept (Fri), 2 pm ($8) A shoulder massage is one of the best possible methods of curing pain in the shoulders. It not only helps in pain relief, but also restores complete motion in the affected shoulder. Shoulder massage provides deep relaxation to the stressed shoulder muscles, stimulates the flow of blood, and improves the functioning of the lymph system. Shoulder massage is a natural analgesic because it stimulates the release of endorphins. In addition, it is an excellant stress buster and can make you feel relaxed and recharged. Learn shoulder massage techniques in an interactive session with Stella Goo, Wellness consultant. Chair Yoga (Mandarin): 29 Sept (Wed), 2 pm ($2 donation) Chair yoga is a great for all ages but especially helpful for you as an older person. If you are recovering from injury or illness, Chair yoga is the perfect solution to keeping those joints and muscles moving in a gentle way. It will maintain, stretch and strengthen your body as you recover. If you have a disability, doing simple yoga stretches from a seated position will help you maintain the best condition possible. All you need is a simple straight back chair (kitchen chairs are well suited or even a folding chair will do) . The chair is not only used fo the seated exercises but also serves as support for many of the standing yoga postures as well. Join Elaine Soh for a chair yoga session *Not to be mised if you have never tried chair yoga!* Sudoku: Every Tue ($15 for 3 months) Are you turning on the TV instead of sitting down to a sesion of Sudoku? Chinese researchers assessed the congnitive abilities of more than 5,000 people aged 55-plus over a period of five years and found that watching TV increased cognitive impairment. A simple game of sudoku could trigger the activation of "survival genes" in your brain, making cells live longer and helping to fight disease. According to another survey conducted at the University of Edinburgh, unused genes in brain cells are activated during stimulation such as when completing Sudoku puzzles. Join WINGS Sodoku sessions every Tuesday afternoon and exercise your brain cells with Lily Kow and Catherine Loo. Did you know that being a loner isn't just bad for you-it can KILL YOU!
